It is wrong to punish a child violently. Parents must learn to know how to educate their children with love and patience. Violent actions against children will only make them more violent later on. Even with adults, violent punishment is no longer acceptable. Mature human beings need discipline, and the best means is self-discipline. The world will only become better when we try to educate ourselves, with the clear understanding that crimes are tormenting us right in our wrong thinking. In sum, in this New Age of maturity, we need a completely new education for a higher civilization.

Abdul-Baha says:

“The communities must punish the oppressor, the murderer, the malefactor, so as to warn and restrain others from committing like crimes. But the most essential thing is that the people must be educated in such a way that no crimes will be committed; for it is possible to educate the masses so effectively that they will avoid and shrink from perpetrating crimes, so that the crime itself will appear to them as the greatest chastisement, the utmost condemnation and torment.”
