It’s a cruel, cruel world out there. Did anyone ever warn you about this when you were younger?

I have gone through all sorts of calamities without thinking that the world is cruel.
I have tasted poverty, hunger, war, jail, medical surgeries … and see clearly that my long life (77 now) is a life of peace, happiness and contentment.
For me calamities are not cruelties; they are divine blessings for our training to develop us from a seed into a robust tree that show fruition of the qualities of the children of God, who are created in His image and likeness.
We feel that life is cruel by assuming that it prevents us from living like imaginary princes or princesses, who are supposed to be very happy. But in reality, our life is to die at any age, in the good pleasure of God. Yes, this is the simple difference of understanding about true life.

Abdul-Baha says:

I hope you will be the cause of opening the eyes and exalting the spirits to follow divine direction. Thus you will assist others to walk in the path of the good pleasure of the Lord. Assuredly it is not to eat, nor to sleep, nor to dress, nor to repose on the couch of negligence. Nay, it is to find one’s way to eternity and understand the divine signs; to receive wisdom from the Lord of Lords, and to move steadily forward like a great sea. This is my hope for thee.
