Because of immaturity.
Immature people think of themselves first. They have no vission to acknowledge their relation to the knowable and unknowable ones. Then, with gradual maturity, they think of family, country, humanity and beyond.
In former centuries, only a small minority of people could get in touch with divine education, and the lived as prophets, saints, boddhisatvas
Today, with the invention of Internet, this education becomes universal. Each and all human beings, sooner or later, will know the supreme station of man under God, and we will all life as boundless souls that serve other souls.
And this is just the beginning of the Age of human maturity. We will be able to know and to do marvelous things beyond all former learning and imagination.

 Abdul-Baha says:

A new chapter in the life of the planet has been opened. Humanity has attained its maturity, and the race consciousness has awakened to the fact that it must put away the childish things which seemed necessary in the day of the “survival of the fittest.” ….

“Does not the dawn of a new day arouse the sleeping ones from their couches of negligence and awaken all those who are not dead?” “Every country has a hundred thousand gigantic temples, but what results have they yielded? The important point is this — from a temple of worship must go forth not only the spiritual but the material needs. Verily, the founding of this temple will mark the inception of the Kingdom of God on earth. It is the evident standard waving in the center of the great continent of America.”
